Why two heights

Too high is as wrong as too low

Most pillow shopping is about finding something softer or thicker. The thing that actually decides whether a pillow suits you is simpler: does your head end up level with the rest of you, or not. Here is the same person on three different heights.

Too low Your head drops

A soft or flat pillow compresses under the weight of your head. Your neck ends up spanning the gap your shoulder left behind.

Level Head in line with the rest of you

Roughly where it would be if you were standing up straight. That is the whole aim — and which of the two faces gets you there depends on how wide your shoulders are.

Too high Your chin is pushed down

Stacking two pillows, or a firm one that is simply too thick, bends your neck the other way. Just as far off as too low, and far more common than people think.

This is why there are two faces, and why you are not asked to pick one at checkout. 12 cm on one side, 9 cm on the other. Broader shoulders and side sleeping usually want the 12; sleeping on your back and narrower shoulders usually want the 9. Start on the one that sounds like you, give it a few nights, and if your chin feels tucked or your neck feels stretched, turn it over. Both are in the box because the right answer is different for different people.

bed

Why the shape, and not just a thicker pillow

Lie on your side and your shoulder props your upper body off the mattress. Your head gets no such lift, so it ends up sitting lower than the rest of you, and your neck spans the difference all night.

On most adults that space is 9 to 12 cm — measure from the point of your shoulder to the side of your head. Broader shoulders, bigger space.

An ordinary pillow has loose filling and no shape of its own. It takes the shape of whatever presses on it, which means it sinks lowest exactly where your head is heaviest — the one place you needed it to hold up.

This one is cut from a single piece of memory foam, and four things are cut into it:

A dip in the centre for the back of your head.
A raised ridge front and back that sits in the space under your neck.
Two wide wings either side, lower than the middle, with a hollow under each one to put your arm in when you sleep on your side.
Two scooped cut-outs at the bottom edge, so the pillow comes down over your shoulder instead of stopping short of it.

There is also a small hole through the centre of the dip. It is there so the foam under your ear is not solid — if you have ever woken with a sore ear from a firm pillow, that is what it is for.

The foam holds all of that under the weight of your head rather than flattening out. That is the whole mechanism; there is nothing else to it.

Which side to sleep on

One pillow, two heights. One face is taller than the other and you simply turn it over.

The 12 cm face — for sleeping on your side, and for broader shoulders. The wider the space between your shoulder and your head, the more height it takes to fill.

The 9 cm face — for sleeping on your back, for narrower shoulders, and for anyone who finds the taller face pushes their chin down toward their chest.

If you move around all night, start on 9 cm. The wings either side mean your head stays on the pillow when you roll rather than sliding off the dip. If you find you are mostly on your side, turn it over.

Nothing to choose at checkout and nothing to send back if you pick wrong — both heights are in the box, because both are in the pillow.

layers

What it is made of

High density memory foam, dark grey. Press it and the dent stays for a moment before filling back in. That slow return is what lets it carry the weight of your head without collapsing. It is firmer than you are expecting, and that is deliberate — a soft contour pillow would squash flat and stop being a contour.

A white quilted cover that zips off. It wraps the base of the pillow and leaves the shaped grey foam exposed on top, which is why the two colours show in the photographs. Cold wash, gentle cycle, hang it to dry. Do not tumble dry it and do not iron it.

The foam core never goes in the machine. It tears and it holds water for days. Spot-clean it with a barely damp cloth if you need to.

Two parts, and that is all there is. No gel layer, no cooling technology, no electronics.

info

Before you order — six honest notes

1. It smells of foam for the first day. New memory foam has a scent when it comes out of the packaging. Unzip the cover, leave the foam out in a room with a window open, and it goes within roughly 24 hours. It is the most common surprise with any foam pillow and we would rather you expected it.

2. Your own pillowcases will not fit. It is 64 × 40 cm and a UK standard pillowcase is 50 × 75 cm, so yours will hang off it and bunch up in the hollow. The zipped cover it comes with is cut to the shape. That is the one to use.

3. Front sleepers: read this before you order. The maker says it suits every position, and the wings either side are lower than the middle, which is where you would lie face-down. That part is true. But the lowest face of this pillow is still 9 cm, and if you currently sleep face-down on something thin or on no pillow at all, this will feel high to you. Our honest read: side and back sleepers are who it is cut for. Front sleepers can make it work, but it is a compromise rather than a fit.

4. It takes a few nights. If you have slept on something soft for years, a firm contour pillow feels wrong at first. Most of the adjusting happens in the first three or four nights. One night is not a fair test, which is exactly why the 60 nights exist.

5. Memory foam sleeps warmer than feathers. That is true of all memory foam and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something. The ice silk cover is the part that helps, because it is what your face is actually touching.

6. It is not a medical device. It does not treat, cure or manage anything, and we make no claim that it does. It is a pillow cut to a shape that keeps your head roughly level with the rest of you. If you have a neck or back condition, ask your GP or physiotherapist before changing your pillow — not us.

60 nights to decide

Sleep on it for two months. If it is not for you, write to contact@hiluci.co.uk and we will refund it or replace it, whichever you prefer. No photographs and no explanation needed.

Sixty rather than thirty because a pillow is not something you can judge in a night — your neck needs a few days to stop expecting the old one.

That is on top of your legal right to cancel within 14 days of delivery under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. The sixty nights is simply us giving you longer than the law asks.

  • 01 · Your head sits low

On your side, your shoulder holds your body off the mattress. Your head gets no such lift, so it ends up below the line of the rest of you.

  • 02 · The space is 9 to 12 cm

Shoulder point to the side of your head. Broader shoulders, bigger space. A soft pillow compresses under your head and fills almost none of it.

  • 03 · The contour fills it

A hollow for the back of your head, a firm edge either side for your neck. The foam holds the shape with your head on it. Head level with the rest of you.

    • The quilted cover unzipped and laid flat beside the foam core
    • The contour pillow on a cream studio background, three quarters from above
    • The contour pillow seen from directly above, full butterfly outline
    • Close up of a raised lobe and the quilted cover beneath it
    • The quilted cover unzipped and laid flat beside the foam core
    • Two of the pillows side by side on a made double bed

      Questions people ask first

For about a day, yes. Unzip the cover, leave the foam out in a room with a window open, and it goes within roughly 24 hours. It is the most common surprise with any foam pillow and we would rather you expected it than discovered it.

Firmer than a feather or hollowfibre pillow, deliberately. A soft contour pillow would squash flat and stop being a contour. It gives under your head slowly rather than collapsing. If you have slept on something soft for years, the first nights will feel odd.

For most people, three or four nights. Your neck is used to one position and this puts it in a slightly different one. That is exactly why there are 60 nights rather than 30 — one night is not a fair test of a pillow like this.

No. It is 64 × 40 cm and a UK standard pillowcase is 50 × 75 cm, so yours will hang off it and bunch up in the hollow. The zipped cover it comes with is cut to the shape and washes at 30°. That is the one to use.

Only the cover. Memory foam must not go in a washing machine — it tears and it holds water for days. Unzip the cover, wash that cold on a gentle cycle, and spot-clean the foam with a barely damp cloth if you need to.

Both, which is what the two faces are for. The 12 cm face suits side sleeping, where the gap to fill is largest. The 9 cm face suits sleeping on your back, where too much height tips your chin toward your chest. Try one, turn it over, keep what works.

Start on the 9 cm face. The wide wings either side mean your head stays on the pillow when you roll, rather than sliding off the hollow. If you find you are mostly on your side, turn it over to 12 cm.

You can, but it is a compromise. The wings either side are lower than the middle and that is where you would lie, so the shape does allow for it — the maker lists it as suitable. Our honest read is different: the lowest face is still 9 cm, and if you sleep face-down on something thin today, this will feel high. It is cut for side and back sleepers. If you are mainly a front sleeper, 60 nights is there for a reason.

Memory foam holds more heat than feathers. That is true of all memory foam, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something. The ice silk cover is the part that helps, because it is smooth, cool, and it is what your face is actually touching.

Memory foam softens gradually over years rather than clumping the way loose filling does. We are not going to put a number on it, because we have not had these in the field for years and would be making it up.

No. It does not treat, cure or manage anything and we make no claim that it does. It is a pillow cut to a shape that keeps your head roughly level with the rest of you. If you have a neck or back condition, ask your GP or physiotherapist before you change your pillow — do not ask us.

Email contact@hiluci.co.uk within 60 nights and we will refund it or replace it, whichever you prefer. No photographs, no explanation needed.
